Can Big Business Save the World?

What Is Enlightenment? magazine dedicated an entire issue (#28, to be precise) to the subject of whether or not big business, with its powerful organizational structures and vast resources, could be compelled to shift its narrow focus on the almighty profit margin and embrace a greater responsibility for the welfare of all. Featured in the issue was an interview with Swedish-born, socially conscious business consultant and corporate insider-reformer Mats Lederhausen. A maverick in the business community, Lederhausen chose to remain deeply involved in corporate work (he has held many positions within the McDonald's Corporation, including Vice President of Strategy and Business Development) while maintaining his pursuit of socially responsible programs and policies. His successes at McDonald's speak volumes not just about his own courage and perseverance but also about the potential for changing systems from within. In this extensive interview, WIE's Elizabeth Debold speaks with Lederhausen about his visionary passion, personal path, and ongoing dedicated efforts to mold the forces of free-market capitalism to help create a better future from the inside out.
